Refurbishment or fit out — which do you need?

The terms overlap, and the label matters less than the outcome. As a rule of thumb: a school refurbishment — sometimes called a school refit — renews and upgrades an existing space — think redecoration, new flooring, new services and modernised finishes. A school fit out creates a fundamentally new space, often changing what a building or room is used for entirely.

Many projects blend both. Because we deliver school fit out and refurbishment services under one roof, you don’t need to decide before you call — we’ll survey the space and recommend the right approach for your budget.

Minimising disruption during your school refurbishment

Not every school refurbishment can wait for the holidays. When works run during term time, we:

  • Phase the programme so spaces are returned to the school as sections complete
  • Fully secure and separate the site, with agreed access routes and delivery times
  • Keep noise and dust under tight control, scheduling the loudest works outside teaching hours where possible
  • Work to safeguarding arrangements agreed with your estates team — with a DBS Enhanced checked core team throughout

The best time to refurbish a school is when the pupils aren’t in it. We specialise in compressing major refurbishment programmes into the summer holidays, programming every trade efficiently to hit hard deadlines.

At St John’s School in Leatherhead, we delivered a major sports hall refurbishment entirely over the summer break: new openings to form a gallery viewing area from the adjoining swimming pool complex, specialist sports acoustic wall cladding, new flooring, lighting, heating, security cages and access control — all overhauled, installed and handed over before the first day of term.

CHAS, SafeContractor and THSP accreditations support our approach to site safety and risk management, alongside ICO Data Protection registration and Environment Agency Upper Tier Waste Carrier registration.
